The experience of psychological trauma can be extremely debilitating and may result in chronic symptoms of anxiety, hypervigilance,
and nightmares for years, even decades after the incident. Standard psychological treatments for trauma, which include
flooding and other desensitization techniques, can be very difficult for some patients to undergo, and have at times made
symptoms worse. Now, there is a new technique for treating psychological trauma that can quickly desensitize a patient
to the traumatizing aspects of the memory of the event and at times dramatically reduce the time it takes to recover from
the trauma. Below you will find a patient education handout that describes EMDR procedures. Dr. Richardson has
completed Level II training in EMDR from the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).
Dr. Richardson is also trained in techniques of Critical Stress Incident Debriefing, which helps employees cope with
workplace tragedies and losses.
If you are interested in EMDR, you can download the patient education handout below. If you are a trauma patient
who is going to see Dr. Richardson, please download and fill out the Impact of Events Scale, which attempts to rate the severity
of your PTSD symptoms and helps to establish a baseline for tracking treatment progress.
